Mali Heffernan – School Director
Mali is a graduate of Southern Cross University’s Contemporary Music Degree. With a background in contemporary singing, she has performed in a variety of choirs and ensembles across the Far North Coast region. Growing up, Mali took piano lessons and was actively involved in school productions—music has always been a central part of her life. She now performs as part of the sibling duo Helio Ray alongside her brother, Taran.
Mali is both the Director and a teacher at International School of Music (ISM) Ballina which opened it’s doors in 2020. She has completed the ISM teacher training program and continues to engage in further professional development, bringing additional courses and opportunities to the ISM Ballina community.
She is passionate about introducing young children to the language of music in a way that is engaging, joyful, and fun.
Taran Heffernan – Private Teacher
Taran grew up immersed in a musical household, where creativity and expression were part of everyday life. He first picked up the guitar at age seven, which then led him to learn the drums. Later, the practicality of school transport led him back to the guitar, an instrument he could more easily carry on the bus, and from there, his multi-instrumental journey took off.

Now a graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Contemporary Music, Taran brings his skills and enthusiasm to the classroom at ISM Ballina and in Burringbar. With a strong foundation in family and community music-making, a deep understanding of youth learning styles, and a love for creative exploration, Taran aims to make his lessons fun, engaging, and inspiring. His goal is to help students build confidence, develop their technique, and tap into their own musical voice.
